The Wing
Project type
Conceptual
Date
2023
Location
Salton Sea, California, USA
The Wing explores architecture as an extension of landscape rather than an object placed within it.
Set against the vast, exposed environment of the Salton Sea, the birdwatching station creates a place for observation without separating the visitor from the landscape. Its form draws from the aerodynamics of a bird’s wing — light, elongated and seemingly suspended above the water.
A pergola takes its structure from the anatomy of a feather. Its repeating elements filter the intense desert sun, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day. Elevated walkways lead toward viewing platforms over the water, opening uninterrupted views across the lake and surrounding habitat.
Rather than competing with the landscape, the architecture frames it. Movement, shade, changing light and distant views become part of the experience.
The Wing is both an observatory and a place to pause — an exploration of biomimicry, environmental sensitivity and the quiet relationship between architecture and the natural world.
